Independent report highlights landslide risks

An independent geological report recommends that CalFire should reconsider plans by a commercial timber company to log trees on landslide prone areas along two key roads near Guerneville.

Neeley Road and Mays Canyon Road are situated on the edge of the 224-acre logging zone under the proposed Silver Estates Timber Harvest Plan. Sixty acres are landslide prone. Currently, under the plan, only 15 of the 60 acres located on landslides will be excluded from logging..

Two areas of concern include a 22 acre deep-seated landslide complex along Neeley Road and a shallow debris flow along Mays Canyon Road that experienced a road failure in 2019.

The report notes that risks can be reduced by excluding all landslide prone areas from logging activities.
